WEST COUNTY CYC – JUNIOR DIVISION - GOLF RULES – Spring 2009

Players will comply with USGA Rules of Golf modified by any local course rules.

Pheasant Run Golf Course Rules:  l) Balls hit onto soccer fields or across the street are considered Lateral Water Hazards.  2) Ball lying in Casual Water or a Plugged Ball may be lifted, cleaned and placed within 6 inches of original position, no closer to the hole without penalty.  3) Play ready golf within reasonable safety.  Rocks, creek beds, golf cart paths may be considered ground under repair, take relief within one club length of the area, no closer to the hole.  Lowest score on the previous hole has honors on the next tee.

A roster of players must conform to the same rules and regulations as any other West CYC sport (parish registration, live within church/parish boundaries etc.).Players must have their own equipment.  Dress code will be the dress code for the course played.  School colors are encouraged, but not required.  Collared shirts are required, cargo shorts are allowed, but no denim will be permitted.

Format of play: (The high school format) 2 players (Pairing) from each team will tee off together as a foursome and play 9 holes. All players will tee off in the Shotgun Start format (all foursomes tee off at the same time on different holes). Pheasant Run: When 5 matches are starting at the same time on the entire course, the first match will start on holes 1-4, second match on holes 6-9, third match on holes 10-13, fourth match on holes 15-18 and fifth match on holes 5,9,14, and 17. If a team anticipates it will have less than eight players at the match, you may use substitutes to play.  (See separate Substitution Golf Rules)

Each team of two (Pairing) on each foursome must keep score for the foursome (two score cards kept for each foursome). Count all strokes including misses and dubbed shots. No Mulligan’s. The maximum number of strokes per hole is 4 over par, including penalty strokes. At the end of the match the coaches gather their Pairing score cards and circle the five (5) lowest scores and put the score total on the front of one of Pairing score cards. The team Pairing score cards should be signed by each coach, by the player keeping score and one of the other players as the attester and turned into the Starter before leaving the course.

A match consists of eight players per team with the best 5 scores tallied for the team score.  A team having less than five (5) players may compete, scoring 4 over par, per hole, for any player less than the needed 5.  (Example: the absent player(s) less than the minimum number of 5 would score a 63. (3+4) x 9).  If for some reason a player cannot complete all nine holes then they should record the maximum score (4 over par) for the holes they could not complete.

The junior golf program consists of 6 tournaments.  The program director will keep track of both the team and individual scores throughout the season.  The two (2) teams by grade and gender with the 6 lowest cumulative team scores will qualify to play in the season ending Team Champions Tournament, to determine the team champion by grade and gender.  The eight (8) junior golfers by grade and gender that have the 6 lowest cumulative individual tournament scores will qualify for the season ending Individual Champions Tournament to determine the individual champion by grade and gender.   (See separate Tie Breaker Golf Rules)

OBSERVE ALL GOLF ETIQUETTE. Be quiet while any player is making her/his shot. Repair all ball marks on the greens and replace divots taken in the fairways.  Respect the greens, including the practice green! No pitching or chipping on the practice green.  Do not shuffle your feet on the greens.  Stay off the greens as much as possible.  Player closest to the hole removes the flagstick after all players reach the green, the away player putts first if ready, do not step on the line between another player’s ball and the hole.  Keep up with the pace of play.  Keep up with the group ahead of yours.  First player to finish the hole retrieves the flagstick and places in the cup after the last player completes his/her putts.  Rake all bunkers after playing out of them.  Never make a stroke or practice swing if a person is close to you.  Don’t play until the players in front of you are out of range.

A coach/observer must walk with each foursome. Their main objective should be keeping up the pace of play and making sure good golf etiquette is observed by the players.  Coach/observers may keep a “backup” score, but the players must keep their own scores and should check with the other team after each hole.  The players are responsible for knowing the rules and observing them.  Coach/observers are not allowed to coach the players or carry their bags.
