Association Announcements

Next Tournament Will Be Monday, February 25, 2008

Our next Tournament will be on Monday, 25 February, at 0800. This will be a 2-Person Scramble (Blind Draw Opponents). The suggestion for Blind Draw Teams came from a few of our members so they could get to meet some of the other member's of the Association.

In addition to the Blind Draw, we will be using the Fall-Ahead/Fall-Back method of play. That is everyone starts from the White Tees. If you Par the hole, you remain on the White Tees. If you Birdie a hole, you move back to the next Tee (normally Blue). If you Bogey a hole, you move ahead to the next Tee (normally Red). As long as you Par a hole, you continue to play from the Tees you hit from on that previous hole. When you Birdie a hole, you continue to move back until their are no more Tees to move too, and you remain their until you bogey a hole. The same for if you Bogey a hole. You will continue to move forward until there are no more Tees to move forward too. You would remain there until you Birdie a hole, and then you would move back a Tee. This method will be used throughout the round.

To ensure we have a "Shotgun Start", we must get 40 players. Last chance to register for this tournament is Wednesday, 20 February at 1200. Please do not register if you are unsure you can play. The last tournament we had 10 No-Shows and had to pay for some of the No-Shows because we guaranteed the course a certain number of players based on your responses. I would rather you not sign up until the last minute, than to signup and not show. And please, out of courtesy to the Association, if you obligate, please show. It not only reflects poorly on the Association, but also on the "CG" if we don't meet our minimum number.

Cost for members is $45 and for non-members is $50.

Fittery, Craddock, Fuller Lisko Win January 2008 Country Club of Miami 4-Person Scramble Tournament

Congratulations to Gene Fittery, Steve Craddock, Ted Fuller and John Lisko for winning the January 2008 D7 Golf Association 4-Person Scramble Tournament at Country Club of Miami. This was the first tournament we used "Blind Draw Teams" and from the comments, most enjoyed this new format. The Team won the event with a Score of 65. The Team of Harry Stevens, Ervin Ramos and Rodney Tello finished second with a Score of 66 and the Team of Ron Holzinger, Ken Dodder, Jimmy Flynn and Devin Marchut finished in 3rd Place with a Score of 67. Rodney Tello won the Longest Drive and George Crawford won Closest-to-the-Pin prizes.

We had a total of 9 teams entered (33 players).

Club Membership

Club Membership costs $20.00 annually. This entitles members to USGA Handicap kept by association, 2 free luncheons annually (normally August and February), and $5.00 discounted fee for each tournament. This amounts to about an $85 savings per year, so it is well worth the money.

The current Membership Year runs from 1 August 2007 through 31 July 2008. You can sign up prior to any of our tournaments if you would like to become a member to begin taking advantage of the discounts.

Tournament Plans For The Next Few Months

Remember, during the Winter Months (In-Season), we play on Monday's. Usually it is the last Monday of the Month. I have had several discussions with long time members and we are going to try some new changes over the remainder of the season. We will have a 4-Person Blind Draw Scramble as one of our events. In the 2-Person Best Ball and 2-Person Scramble events, twosomes will be mixed with another group randomly drawn. Some of these changes will feel wierd to those of you used to playing with the same people all the time. The suggestions came about so that people could get to meet other/new people each month.

Additionally, to make it a little more fair play for our better golfers, we will be trying a new Handicap System, starting with the December Tournament. Again, those of "US" Hackers (as I call myself and the majority of the membership), this Handicap System will still be beneficial to us also. Below is a breakdown of how the System works. The only person knowing the holes used, will be the computer:

PEORIA SYSTEM

A hole score selection system, often called the "Peoria System". With this system, the tournament committee secretly selects a par-3 hole, a par-5 hole and four par-4 holes from an 18-hole course. The par-4s should be representative in difficulty with two chosen from the front nine and two from the back nine. TM calculates the handicap by adding the player's strokes over par on the six selected holes and multiplying that number by 2.8. This will become the golfer's handicap...to be deducted from his gross score. Furthermore, no more than a maximum of three over par on the par-3 and par-4s, and four over par on the par-5 is allowed.

We will try this new System for a couple of tournaments to see if it is something that is fair to all players.

The formats we will be using for the next few tournaments are as follows:

2-Person Scramble (Opponenets will be drawn randomly) (February)
Individual Play/Random Draw Foursomes (March)
4-Person Scramble/AS Miami Mutual Assistance Tournament (April)
